The Pacific Ocean covers 72 percent of Earth’s surface with a depth of approx 3688 meters. 98% of the earth’s total water is oceanic water and sea ice.   4. Southern Ocean: It connects the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific oceans. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current flows to the east; it is known to be the strongest current.
  5. Arctic Ocean: It is the smallest ocean in the world surrounded by North America, Europe, Asia, and North America.

Largest ocean in the world- the Pacific Ocean

This ocean occupies about one-third of the global surface. It is the deepest ocean with a depth of 10,920 meters in the Mariana Trench. Its average depth is 4200 meters.

How did the Pacific Ocean get its name?

The name Pacific was given in the 16th century by Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. He was seeking a western route to the Spice Islands via South America for fortune. Spice Islands was famous for its popular spices, nutmeg, cloves, and pepper at the time. After navigating through the Straits of Magellan with 270 crew members, they entered an unfamiliar ocean in November 1520. While entering the pacific ocean they thought Spice Islands were near little did they know they are thousands of miles away from the destination.

Ferdinand Magellan found this ocean peaceful and thus called it the Pacific which was synonymous with peace at that time.
